Title
Florida League of Cities Municipal 2021 Achievement Award for City Spirit presented to City of Gainesville for the Edible Groves Program (NB)
Explanation
In 2021 the City launched the Edible Groves Program, an initiative to plant small orchards of fruit and nut bearing trees in public spaces to improve healthy food access for Gainesville neighbors. The project idea was born from suggestions shared by neighbors at a City workshop on food accessibility in 2019. Through the collaborative efforts of staff across multiple City departments, the project was planned in 2020 and piloted in 2021 using Tree Mitigation Funds. The Edible Groves Program continues to thrive today with over 175 fruit and nut trees planted across Fred Cone Park, Smokey Bear Park, and a greenway on SW 34th Street. In addition to increasing food access, the program helps to beautify city spaces, increase horticultural education, and positively impact the environment.
Based on positive feedback from neighbors and elected officials, as well as the growth and production of the plants, City staff submitted an application to the Florida League of Cities (FLC) Municipal Achievement Award Program for recognition of the success of the Edible Groves Project. In late June 2022, the FLC announced the City of Gainesville’s Edible Groves Program as the winner of the statewide Municipal Achievement Award in the City Spirit category. To celebrate this accomplishment, FLC representatives will present the City with a trophy recognizing the Edible Groves Program.
