Communities for a Lifetime Mini-Grant (B)

This item authorizes the acceptance of a Communities for a Lifetime Mini-Grant from the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and authorizes the City Manager to execute a grant agreement and related documents from the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.

Explanation
In January 2008, Elder Options (formerly the Mid-Florida Area Agency on Aging) announced the availability of mini-grants to support programs under the Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DoEA) Communities for a Lifetime Program.  Only those local governments that had been certified by DoEA (the City of Gainesville being one of only three in Alachua County) were eligible to apply for the mini-grants.

In February, City staff were approached by ElderCare of Alachua County, representing the group that has been working on a proposal to establish a senior recreation center in Gainesville and Alachua County, to ask the City of Gainesville to apply for a mini-grant on behalf of the community partnership.  Staff agreed and submitted the proposal, which is included with the agenda backup.  In short, the project is to develop an educational/informational campaign with a video and other materials to promote a senior recreational center in the community.  ElderCare of Alachua County would implement the project, and the City would serve as a pass-through entity to receive the DoEA mini-grant.

The mini-grant proposal submitted by the City has been approved at the regional level by Elder Options and it is expected to be approved by DoEA by the end of March.  Once approved, the project activities must be completed by June 30, 2008.

Fiscal Note
Mini-grant funding in the amount of approximately $4,100 will be provided by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.  (The final amount will be determined upon DoEA approval.)  There is no match required for this project.

The City Commission:  1) authorize acceptance of a Communities for a Lifetime Mini-Grant from the Florida Department of Elder Affairs; and 2) authorize the City Manager to execute a grant agreement and related documents from the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.
