Title: Extension of Contract for Public Education for Recycling and Waste Reduction at Commercially Serviced Properties (B)

Title

Extension of Contract for Public Education for Recycling and Waste Reduction at Commercially Serviced Properties (B)

Explanation

An estimated 73% of our local solid waste stream is generated from collection at commercial properties and at residential properties serviced privately.  The promotion of recycling and waste reduction for these properties is essential for the City of Gainesville to achieve its waste reduction goal of 50% by the year 2004.  Furthermore, recycling and waste reduction are the most effective ways to lessen environmental impacts related to the generation of solid waste.

The City has a contract agreement with Group 5 & Associates, Inc. for Public Education for Commercial Recycling and Waste Reduction.  The City has the option of renewing this agreement for three (3) additional one-year periods.  The Public Works Department's Solid Waste Division wishes to negotiate and execute the first contract extension with Group 5 & Associates for the period of October 1, 2000 through September 30, 2001 for the provision of public information and education services related to commercial services.  After this extension of the agreement, the City shall have the option of renewing this agreement for two additional one-year periods.

Fiscal Note

Funding is available in the Solid Waste Enterprise Fund.

Recommendation

The City Commission: 1) authorize the City Manager or his designee to execute the First Extension of the contract with Group 5 & Associates, Inc. for the period October 1, 2000 through September 30, 2001, and upon satisfactory performance, to exercise the option to also extend for up to two additional one-year periods, subject to approval of the City Attorney as to form and legality; and 2) approve the issuance of a purchase order to Group 5 & Associates Inc., in an amount not to exceed $30,000, for Fiscal Year 2000-2001 and in each subsequent year,  for public education services for recycling and waste reduction at commercial properties and at residential properties serviced privately, subject to the appropriation of funds.
