Title
Mutual Aid Agreement with the University of Florida Police Department (B)
Explanation
The Gainesville Police Department currently has a Mutual Aid Agreement in effect with the University of Florida Police Department (UPD). This agreement provides increased police resources and cooperation for support to and from each respective law enforcement agency when needed. In the past year, the Gainesville Police Department has used the Mutual Aid Agreement with UPD several times, such as when working stolen vehicle cases, responding to calls for service which occur at UF sororities and fraternities located in the City, and when assisting the University Police Department with large scale special events on the UF campus, such as Project Graduation, concerts, etc. This year the Mutual Aid Agreement is being amended to expand UPD's powers to include non-criminal traffic violations on City streets and derivative violations discovered after a stop is made.
Fiscal Note
There will be no fiscal impact for signing the Mutual Aid Agreement. At the time where mutual aid is extended, the cost is typically borne by the offering agency.
Recommendation
The City Commission authorize the City Manager to renew a police Mutual Aid Agreement between the City of Gainesville Police Department and the University of Florida Police Department subject to the approval of the City Attorney as to form and legality.
