Title
Gainesville Sports Organizing Committee Funding
Explanation
The Gainesville Sports Organizing Committee (GSOC) submitted a request for funding to the Mayor and City Commission for Fiscal Year 1998/99 in the amount of $30,000. These funds would be used to bid and host regional and national sporting events in the Gainesville community.
The GSOC has requested funding from the City Commission Contingency Fund for individual events and has received funding. In Fiscal Year 1997/98, the City funded the GSOC $5,000. The City has provided other support for events including staff and reduced fees for facility rentals. Last year, the City reduced the fees for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Multipurpose Center (MLK Center) facility rental and staff support from $1,300 to $600. The specific upcoming events for fiscal year 1998/99 are the Youth Basketball of America National Championships July 6-10 and the Sunshine State Games Basketball Championships July 15-18.
The GSOC also receives operational funding from various sources including 30% of the last penny of the Alachua County tourist development tax (capped at $105,000 per year), program event revenues, advertising and membership dues.
