Title
Greentree Park Playground Program Update (B)
Explanation
On March 13, 2001, the City Commission appropriated $41,187 to establish a pilot after-school program for Greentree Park, which was implemented in April 2001. The pilot program continued through September 2001. Due to poor participation numbers, Staff requested permission from the Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee (RCA), who had been assigned oversight of this project by the Commission, permission to revaluate the program with the neighborhood involved. The RCA Committee agreed to allow staff to meet with the neighborhood to try to determine what could be done to make the program more successful. Staff, along with help from UF faculty, met with the neighborhood association and members from the Assembly of God Church to work out a program that would meet the resident's needs.
Staff presented this proposal to RCA at its December 17, 2001 meeting. The proposal includes funding of a Gainesville Reads Program for the neighborhood, and some continued recreational opportunities. Of the original $41,187 funding, $7,906 remains. The Gainesville Reads Program will cost $6,900 to fund for one year; the remaining funds will be spent on additional supplies and recreational programming for the neighborhood.
Fiscal Note
Allow staff to spend the remaining budgeted funds for the proposal.
Recommendations
The City Commission: 1) hear the presentation from staff on the Gainesville Reads program; and 2) approve the revised use of funds for the Greentree Park Playground Program.
