On December 20, 2005, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Alphonso Jackson announced the award of $1.33 billion dollars in grants to house and serve homeless individuals and families.  Among those grants were five local projects.
 
Explanation
On June 8, 2005, the Alachua County Coalition for the Homeless and Hungry, in partnership with the City of Gainesville and local providers, submitted an application for funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) "Continuum of Care for the Homeless" competition.  Renewal funding for five local projects was included in the $1.33 billion dollars announced by HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson on December 20, 2005.  Those projects and the amounts awarded are:
 
§      Lee Conlee House (Palatka) - Supportive Services for Homeless Victims of Domestic Violence - $38,306
§      Meridian Behavioral Healthcare - HOPE Program - Transitional Housing for Homeless Persons - $99,101
§      Peaceful Paths - Transitional Housing for Homeless Victims of Domestic Violence - $84,974
§      Pleasant Place - Transitional Housing for Homeless Pregnant and Parenting Teens - $80,569
§      VETSPACE - Transitional Housing for Homeless Veterans - $106,215
 
The total award is $409,165.
 
The City of Gainesville will continue to serve as the grantee/fiscal agent for both the Meridian and VETSPACE projects.  As part of the award process, representatives from the HUD field office in Jacksonville wish to make a presentation to the City Commission.
 
Fiscal Note
Grant funding for the five renewal projects will be provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
 
Recommendation
The City Commission receive a presentation from representatives from the HUD field office in Jacksonville.
