This item involves hearing a presentation from the Local Intergovernmental Team on the Final recommendations and comments on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Proposed Plan for the Cabot-Koppers Superfund Site and authorizing the Mayor to transmit the City of Gainesville's final comments and recommendations to the US EPA.
Explanation
The Local Intergovernmental Team (LIT) consists of staff from the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department, the City of Gainesville, Gainesville Regional Utilities, the Alachua County Health Department and outside technical experts. On August 30, 2010, the LIT presented its recommendations and comments on the US EPA Proposed Plan for the Cabot-Koppers Superfund to the Joint City and County Commission. The LIT has prepared the Final recommendations and comments including the recommended changes from the Joint City and County Commission meeting. The LIT will present these comments and recommendations on the Proposed Plan to the Alachua County Board of County Commission on September 28, 2010. All Public comments are due to the US EPA on or before October 15, 2010.
On July 15, 2010, US EPA released the Proposed Plan for the Cabot-Koppers Superfund Site. The Proposed Plan identified EPA's proposed remedy for cleaning up the Koppers portion of the Cabot-Koppers site and includes an analysis of alternatives including timelines and costs for each remedy. The US EPA is the lead agency responsible for development of the remediation plan for the site. The US EPA held a public meeting on August 5, 2010 to describe the Proposed Plan to the public and to solicit comments from the citizens.
