This item involves a request for traffic calming on NW 22nd Street from University Avenue to NW 8th Avenue.
Explanation
At the July 12, 2007 Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee, the Public Works Department staff was requested to install radar based speed signs on N.W. 22nd Street. On October 10, 2007, speed signs containing radar units were installed at a material cost of $ 4,100 for both signs. The week of January 25, 2008, a follow-up traffic study was conducted along N.W. 22nd Street. This was one year after the original study was completed and 3 months after the additional radar based signage was installed.
The study results show that the speeds have been reduced along N.W. 22nd Street. The after study is attached.
Fiscal Note
The permanent installation of the signs will cost an additional $ 4,800 total plus $ 40 monthly re-curring fee for electricity. Funds for the permanent installation are available in the Public Works Department budget. The plan to build a raised intersection has been placed in the Departments CIP and has been appropriately prioritized with the re-surfacing of N.W. 22nd Street.
Recommendation
The Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee 1) receive a report from the Public Works Department; and 2) authorize the Public Works Department to make the sign installation permanent and to include "YOUR SPEED IS" signs and the actual speed limit sign.
