Initiate National Search for an Equal Opportunity Director (NB)
Explanation
The current Equal Opportunity Director, Jimmie Williams, has announced his retirement for no later than September, 2009. In order to select a replacement for this position in a timely manner, a national search should begin in June.
Upon learning of this pending vacancy, the City Commission requested that City and County staff evaluate the feasibility of combining EO Offices for mutual gain and efficiency. In addition, the City sponsored a forum on April 27 at the MLK Center to solicit feedback from the community on expectations for the Equal Opportunity Office. Although the City Commission has not yet reached a decision on a consolidation with the Alachua County Equality Opportunity Office or for a shared director, beginning the search now would not preclude making such changes. In either case, the Director would still fall under the City's Charter Officer position and candidates could be notified of any changes in the scope or responsibilities of the position prior to the interview process. Therefore, staff recommends initiating as soon as possible a national search for the new Equal Opportunity Director.

Funds for this position are budgeted.
