Title
Protection of Antibiotics (B)
Proposed Resolution to Support Statewide and National Bans on Non-therapeutic Uses of Antibiotics in Livestock Production (B)
Explanation
On August 19, 2014, Commissioner Warren received a request via e-mail from Vickie Machado of the Food & Water Watch advocacy group requesting the City consider adopting a resolution against antibiotic overuse. Ms. Machado provided a draft resolution which she states has been used by other cities, such as Seattle, Cleveland, and Chicago, to spread awareness and to support two federal bills; the Protection of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA) and the Prevention of Antibiotic Resistance Act (PARA). The request also asks that the resolution, if adopted, be sent to Representative Ted Yoho, Senator Bill Nelson, and Senator Marco Rubio.
At the September 4, 2014 City Commission meeting, Commissioner Warren requested that this issue be referred to the Public Safety Committee to review the resolution for further discussion with a target for action by March 2015. Staff has contacted individuals from the University of Florida and Shands who will be present at the meeting.
The Public Safety Committee began discussion on this topic at its September 22 meeting. At that time they requested to receive information on the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in livestock production in order to make an informed decision on a request to endorse legislation regarding this matter.
