The vision triangle is a portion of land on corner lots where nothing is permitted to be built, placed, or grown that would limit or obstruct the sight distance of motorists entering or leaving the intersection. The purpose of the vision triangle is to ensure that there is adequate and safe visibility at intersections. The current provisions of Section 30-341 in the City of Gainesville Land Development Code are more restrictive than the standards of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). This can be a problem in particular areas of the City where infill development is encouraged. In specific areas that are regulated by special area plans such as University Heights and College Park, the special area plans require the AASHTO standard for vision triangles.
The city public works department has researched the vision triangle requirements, and recommends adoption of the AASHTO sight triangle standards. Included in the petition are selected illustrations from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Roadway and Traffic Design Standards, 2000 edition, Standard Index 546 - sheet 1 and 2, which illustrate the AASHTO standards. This design standard publication is subject to periodical updating. The FDOT has adopted the AASHTO standards and the illustrations clearly summarize the AASHTO sight triangle standards and provide for easy to understand diagrams.
