Title
Additional Funding for Gainesville Police Department (GPD) Party Patrol (NB)
Explanation
On June 12, 2000, the Gainesville Police Department made a presentation to the City Commission requesting approval for a Citywide Party Patrol patterned after a similar successful effort by the City of Tallahassee. The City Commission approved the acceptance of a federal Byrne Grant to fund the additional overtime that would be needed to establish the Gainesville Party Patrol. In addition, the Commission appropriated $12,484 from the Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Fund to match the grant. The grant funds will be available October 1, 2000. The Commission requested that staff consider financial alternatives for beginning the Party Patrol during the current fiscal year.
Fall semester classes begin at the University of Florida on August 23, 2000. In order for the Party Patrol to be most effective this assignment should begin at the start of the fall semester. The cost to implement the Party Patrol from August 23 to October 1 would be $7,200.
Fiscal Note
The Party Patrol cost is estimated to be $1,200 per week. The cost to fund the Party Patrol for six weeks is $7,200. Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Funds can be used to match other funds for this purpose.
Recommendation
The City Commission approve the appropriation of $3,600 from the Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Fund and $3,600 from the Commission Contingency to pay for the first six weeks of Party Patrol implementation.
