Title
Funding for Gainesville Police Department Purchase of Canines (NB)
Explanation
The Gainesville Police Department staffs a total of seven canines for operational purposes. Six of the canines are assigned to the Operations Bureau and one to the Special Investigation Division. Because two of the current canines are being retired from service, the Police Department has identified a need to acquire two new canines. The total estimated cost to replace the canines is $15,000. The Police Department is requesting approval to purchase the canines using federal forfeiture funds. Approximately $14,000 will be used to purchase the animals and $1,000 will be used for travel and training expenses.
Fiscal Note
Funds for this purchase totaling approximately $15,000 are available in the Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Fund. The balance in the account is $2,736,326 unreserved fund balance from Statement of Expenditures and Encumbrances for the Year Ended September 30, 2011.
Recommendation
The City Commission: 1) authorize the City Manager or his designee to execute a contract to purchase two canines, subject to the approval of the City Attorney as to form and legality; and 2) approve the expenditure from the Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Fund up to a total of $15,000; or 3) authorize the purchase from the General Fund.
Alternative Recommendation
The City Commission: 1) authorize the City Manager or his designee to execute a contract to purchase two canines, subject to the approval of the City Attorney as to form and legality; and 2) approve the purchase from the General Fund.
