Resolution to Dual-Name a Section of Southeast 1st Street to "Spc. Jeffrey Mattison Wershow Way" (B)
Explanation
Spc. Jeffrey Mattison Wershow was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida, and was an exemplary and active participant in student government, sports, and civic life. He served faithfully in the U. S. Army Parachute Infantry for three years, was honorably discharged in June 2003, and requested service with the National Guard. While attending Santa Fe Community College, he was called to active duty in December 2002 and deployed with Company C, Second Battalion, 124th Infantry Regiment, Baghdad, Iraq, where he gave his life for the Service of his Country on July 6, 2003. The City of Gainesville and the community wish to dedicate themselves to his memory and the supreme sacrifice he made by designating and dual-naming Southeast 1st Street from Southeast 2nd Avenue to Southeast 3rd Avenue as "Spc. Jeffrey Mattison Wershow Way" in his honor so that his sacrifice and dedication to his Country will always be remembered.
Fiscal Note
The funds for producing the signs are available in the Public Works Department FY 03 operating budget.
Recommendation
The City Commission: 1) adopt the Resolution authorizing Southeast 1st Street from Southeast 2nd Avenue to Southeast 3rd Avenue to be designated and dual-named as "Spc. Jeffrey Mattison Wershow Way"; and 2) authorize the City Manager or designee to carry out all necessary actions to fulfill the Resolution.
