Title
Update of the City Code of Ordinances, Section 2-283, Duties of the Cultural Affairs Board (B)

Explanation
The City of Gainesville's Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) serves as the area's designated Local Arts Agency (LAA), administering the arts and cultural resources of Gainesville and Alachua County through the Cultural Element of the City's Comprehensive Plan, which encompasses all arts and eco-heritage tourism.

On November 14, 1988, the Gainesville/Alachua County Cultural Affairs Board (CAB) was created pursuant to the City's Code of Ordinances, Part II, Chapter 2 Administration, Article V. Boards, Commissions and Committees, Division 3.

The CAB is composed of ten City-appointed members and five County-appointed members, with the DCA Manager serving as the City Liaison. The Board was created "to advise the City Commission in the projection of interest in and promotion of fine arts, literary arts, performing arts, and crafts; to develop local art resources and to assist the Director of Cultural Affairs in the planning and implementation of community arts involvement in and around the city. (Code 1960, ยง 2-121)" (Sec. 2-283. Duties generally.)

On March 11, 2002, the City Commission approved DCA's revisions to its Cultural Tourism Plan.

Therefore, changes to the City's Code of Ordinances are proposed to reflect the changes in the duties and scope of services as regards the CAB's implementation of the goals of the Plan: "The duties of the Cultural Affairs Board shall be to advise the City Commission in regard to interest in and promotion of the arts, and eco-heritage tourism, to develop local cultural resources and to assist the Director of Cultural Affairs in the planning and implementation of community cultural involvement."
