Explanation
The identified sewer is an existing 21-inch diameter vitrified clay pipe (VCP) sanitary sewer located within the rights of way along NW 23rd Street and along NW 8th Avenue between approximately the 2200 to 3200 blocks of NW 8th Avenue. The sewer main has exceeded its expected service life and may be subject to internal corrosion, breaks, and groundwater infiltration if not rehabilitated. The depth of bury and environmental considerations associated with rehabilitating the gravity sewer main make replacement using traditional open trench techniques a nonviable alternative.
Lining the sewer main with a cured-in-place resin impregnated liner provides an industry proven and cost effective method for the trenchless rehabilitation of the sewer main. The lining of the sewer main will provide renewed structural integrity, eliminate internal corrosion and eliminate infiltration of ground water into the sewer system, which can exceed the existing gravity system capacity resulting in ground settlement and ultimate failure of the system. Infiltration also significantly reduces the wastewater collection and treatment system’s capacity as well as increasing pumping and treatment costs. This project is part of an on-going GRU Capital Improvements program to reduce infiltration and inflow within the wastewater collection system. This project will also provide documented proactive sewer system integrity enhancement made by GRU in association with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Consent Order No. 03-1591. In addition to lining the sewer main, the work includes televising of the sewer line, heavy cleaning, and the installation and operation of a temporary wastewater bypass pump and above ground force main.
