Title
Historic Preservation Issues - Referral to the Community Development Committee (B)
This item reflects the August 23, 2011 meeting action by the Community Development Committee (CDC) on a Historic Preservation referral from the City Commission.
Explanation
At the August meeting of the CDC, the Committee heard a report from staff on several items regarding the status of future historic districts and prospects for a community Main Street Program. Supplementary information was reviewed by the Committee regarding the City's Historic Preservation program as well.
The Committee made two motions including: 1) to direct staff to explore the possibility of pursuing a thematic historic district based upon the existing community's stock of Chert Structures; and 2) to direct staff to pursue the placement of Civil War commemoration plaques in areas around downtown and Depot Avenue in order to bring attention to the Battle of Gainesville.
Fiscal Note
The direction from the Committee on the latter motion was to investigate existing funds currently allocated to Main Street reconstruction in the City's CIP.
Recommendation
The City Commission: 1) endorse the recommended CDC motions regarding this referral; and 2) remove this item from the Committee's referral list.
