Title
Downtown Festival and Art Show Poster Award (B)
Explanation
In 1992, the City of Gainesville's Department of Cultural Affairs assumed the responsibilities for planning and hosting the annual Downtown Festival and Art Show (DFAS).
Each year, Event Coordinator Linda Piper selects one artist to interpret a scene or sentiment to commemorate that year's show. This image is used on show posters and t-shirts, and on invitation postcards furnished to each participating artist.
November 2001 marked the 20th annual staging of this popular event. Artist Kathleen Wobie offered several works for consideration. Her downtown scene of the Union Street Station and the Hippodrome State Theatre at dusk, flanked by Florida's State tree, the Sabal Palm, was selected.
The May issue of Sunshine Artists Magazine announced winners of its Sixth Annual Poster Contest national winners. Gainesville's Downtown Festival and Art Show poster by Ms. Wobie was chosen for its first place award in the category of Best Representation of an Area. The DFAS was one of only two Florida art shows to capture a top award.
The Commission will recognize this original work from its use as cover art for the City's Gainesville 2001 Citizen's Report, and the Finance Department's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.
