Title
Florida Humanities Council Grant (B)
Explanation
The Department of Cultural Affairs' Thomas Center Galleries Coordinator has prepared a letter of application to the Florida Humanities Council for a $2,000 mini-grant for a unique exhibition, "Saving Grace." The show, scheduled for December 2, 2000 through January 28, 2001 in the Main Gallery, showcases five "Self-taught" or "Outsider" artists from Florida. Guest curator, Gary Monroe, who teaches photography at Daytona Beach Community College, has interviewed about 65 self-taught artists throughout the state. The show will contain artwork by these selected artists, photographs of them at work, and essays about their inspiration, histories, and creative processes. The Humanities Council strongly supports the publication of a catalogue, so this will be a large part of the budget and will add a follow-up document to a very educational exhibition. A lecture will be part of the program as well.
Fiscal Note
The overall budget for this project is $4,400. Our match will be $2,400 from the Thomas Center Gallery account. This show will be the highlight of the exhibition year.
Recommendation
The City Commission: 1) authorize the City Manager to submit an application; and 2) authorize the City Manager to execute the grant application, subsequent agreement, and other grant-related documents subject to approval by the City Attorney as to form and legality.
