Federal LECFTF Funding for the Establishment of an Intelligence Center at the Gainesville Police Department (NB)
Explanation
A centralized Intelligence Center at the Gainesville Police Department is needed to deal with the increasing demands of receiving, analyzing and disseminating timely intelligence and criminal incident information to our staff members, members of other law enforcement agencies and, as applicable, to our community. The Intelligence Center will be located within a renovated area of the Department and will be staffed by crime analysts. The Center will display and/or provide access to law enforcement databases, identify local and regional crime trends of import to our area and will have the responsibility of disseminating information regarding Homeland Security issues. Funding is requested for renovations and equipment and related costs which will facilitate the gathering and sharing of intelligence and criminal incident information.
Fiscal Note
Funding for this $51,000 expenditure is available in the Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Fund and is allowable per Federal 21 U.S.C.ยง 881, found in the U. S. Department of Justice "A Guide to Equitable Sharing of Federally Forfeited property for State and Local Enforcement Agencies". Technological enhancements are one of the areas which are most appropriate under this Act.
The balance in the account is $2,183,116.60.
Recommendation
The City Commission approve the appropriation and expenditure of an amount not to exceed $51,000 from the Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Fund for the purchase of technology related projects as detailed in the explanation.
