Title

Proposal for Innovative Transportation Solutions (B)

Explanation

City of Gainesville, Regional Transit System is preparing a proposal to develop alternative transportation services to help individuals and families move from unemployment and welfare to self-sufficiency.

Within the City of Gainesville, there is demonstrated need for additional transportation services other than what the current RTS system provides. Examples include the need for individuals' transportation to work on second and third shifts, when public transportation service is not available. In addition, many individuals who reside outside the City of Gainesville area, in rural sections of Alachua County, have little opportunity to obtain job training or working opportunities due to the lack of transportation service into the Gainesville area. Riders will comprise either workers hired by private employers where standard work-shift vanpool service is needed or; public agencies where multi-trips are required for transportation to job interviews, job training, social service agencies, medical appointments and childcare services.

Funding is being provided for one year by The Alachua Bradford Regional Workforce Development Board. A total of $500,000 is available for transportation program initiatives. No matching funds are required. This proposal has a submission deadline of March 16, 2000.

Fiscal Note

No local match is required.

Recommendation

The City Commission: 1) authorize RTS to submit a proposal for Innovative Transportation Solutions to the Alachua/Bradford Regional Workforce Development Board; and 2) authorize the City Manager, or his designee, to sign all mandatory forms for grant proposal, subject to approval by the City Attorney as to form and legality.
