Explanation

The forestry section of the Recreation and Parks Department utilizes aerial devices to maintain trees on the City's right of ways and public parks, to work on special projects such as the pine beetle program, and to clean up after a storm and other emergency situations. The truck and aerial device being replaced have surpassed their cost-effective lives after fourteen (14) years of utilization.  The normal replacement schedule for this type of equipment is ten (10) years. The truck cab and chassis on which the aerial device and chipper body are to be mounted will be provided by the City under a separate contract.  Bids were advertised to 177 prospective bidders with 22 requesting copies and five responding with a bid.  One of which was considered non-responsive.  The recommended vendor had the best evaluated bid meeting specifications.

Fiscal Note

The purchase price is $57,792 and is available in the Fleet Replacement Fund.

Recommendation

The City Commission: 1) award the purchase of a 50 foot aerial device and chipper body to Altec Industries, Inc.; 2) authorize the issuance of a purchase order for the equipment in the amount of $57,792; and 3) authorize the City Manager or his designee to execute all related contractual agreements required.
