An ordinance of the City of Gainesville, Florida, setting the election date for the 2012 regular city election and setting the run-off election date, if necessary; setting the dates for qualifying for the 2012 regular election; providing a severability clause; providing a preemption clause; and providing an immediate effective date.
 
explanation
Section 9-2(b) of the Code of Ordinances provides that the Clerk shall recommend a date for the next regular election to the Commission at or before the first regular City Commission meeting in May of each year.  Accordingly, on May 5, 2011, the Clerk recommended January 31, 2012 as the date for the next regular City election.  The Commission authorized this office to prepare and the Clerk to advertise the Ordinance setting the date of the 2012 City Commission Elections for January 31, 2012 with a runoff date, if needed, of February 28, 2012.

The City Commission adopt the proposed ordinance.
