Special Investigations Division Drug Buy Money from Contraband Forfeiture Trust Funds (NB)

Explanation

Due to several long-term drug investigations, the GPD Special Investigations Division is requesting additional funds for use as undercover drug buy money.  The use of contraband forfeiture funds, which come from drug investigations, eliminates the need for the re-allocation of annual budgeted funds to cover the expenses in ongoing drug investigations.  Since these current investigations are confidential in nature, no additional investigative information may be presented.

Fiscal Note

Funds for this expenditure are available in the Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Fund and are allowable per Federal 21 U.S.C. § 881, found in the U.S. Department of Justice "A Guide to Equitable Sharing of Federally Forfeited Property for State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies."  The balance in the account is $3,063,174.90.  Balance is adjusted to account for pending items.

Recommendation

The City Commission approve the appropriation and expenditure of $75,000 from the Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Fund for undercover drug buy money.
