Title
Median Design Guidelines (B)
Explanation
On September 15, 2003, the City Beautification Board conducted a workshop with City and County Commissioners, as well as City and County staff, to discuss a Median Design Plan that addressed establishing guidelines for future median landscapes on city, county, and state roadways. It became apparent that regardless of governmental jurisdiction, there was no comprehensive plan currently in place that provided guidance towards the continuity of design and landscaping of medians. This civic design study delineated types of medians in relation to high, medium, and low traffic areas. In addition, it addressed planting recommendations, highlighting appropriate planting materials for the different types of medians. It also addressed maintenance requirements and standardization of signage.
City Parks staff reviewed the initial draft of the document and incorporated recommendations for compliance with all tree planting and landscaping regulations.
Fiscal Note
There is no fiscal impact at this time.
Recommendation
The City Commission: 1) adopt the Median Design Guidelines; and 2) recommend the City Manager or his designee share the document with State and County staffs in hopes that they will adopt these guidelines to enhance the continuity of median beautification within the City and unincorporated urban area.
