Title
The Community Initiative on Race and Race Relations (NB)
Explanation
In September 2006, the Office of Equal Opportunity sponsored a Race Summit to bring awareness the issue of race and institutional racism. As a result of the Summit, a consultant group was retained by the City. The group recommended the creation of a Dismantling Racism Change Team, which is comprised of a charter group of citizens and EO office employees. The Team envisioned an agenda that would examine the state of race in the City of Gainesville. This agenda would include providing equity indicators, conducting study circles, sponsoring a film festival, and dialoguing of issues related to race, race relations, and other prejudices of individuals. This effort will "Kick-Off" during M. L. King Week, and the first activity will be the film festival to be held in February and March 2010.
Recommendation
The City Commission: 1) hear a presentation from Sr. EO Specialist, Gwendolyn Saffo; and 2) take appropriate action.
