Explanation
The City of Gainesville is eligible to apply for a direct award of $289,496 under the Local Law Enforcement Block Grants Program, established within the Bureau of Justice Assistance under the Fiscal Year 1996 Omnibus Appropriations Act (Public Law 104-134). These funds will be combined with $32,166 in matching funds, and will be used to contribute to the acquisition of the required upgrade to the 800 Megahertz communications system.
Fiscal Note
The $289,496 is a one-time award for the purposes specified in the explanation. Federal funds provided under this grant may not exceed 90% of the total costs of the project, and may be expended over a two year period. The required local match of $32,166 is included in the Fiscal Year 2000 preliminary budget.
Recommendation
The City Commission authorize the City Manager: 1) to apply to the Department of Justice for $289,496 under this grant program, and if awarded; 2) to execute the grant award contract, pending approval by the City Attorney as to form and legality; and 3) to execute any additional documents that may be necessary
