Title
Purchase of Truck for the Gainesville Police Department Mounted Unit (B)
Explanation
The Mounted Unit has a need for a new truck due to a transmission failure on a current truck. It has been determined to be too costly to repair the transmission a second time and the repair would exceed the book value of the truck. This vehicle will be used by the Mounted Unit to transport the Department horses to and from patrol areas, training and special functions. The Department does not have a truck capable of towing the weight of the horse and trailer on a daily basis and needs a new truck with certain modifications.
The Mounted Unit is currently borrowing a truck from another unit; however, continued use of this truck will likely damage its transmission since it is not equipped properly for towing.
Fiscal Note
Funding of the truck would not exceed $26,000 and is available in the Federal Law Enforcement Contraband Forfeiture Trust Fund. This funding is allowable per Federal 21 U.S.C. ยง 881, found in the U.S. Department of Justice's "A Guide to Equitable Sharing of Federally Forfeited Property for State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies." The balance in this account is $320,822.31.
Recommendation
The City Commission approve the acquisition of a new truck to be used by the Gainesville Police Department Mounted Unit.
