Establish Transit Operator Trainee Job Title (B)

Explanation

In order to clearly differentiate between fully qualified and functioning Transit Operators and employees who are getting qualified, the RTS Department and Human Resources have determined that the title of Transit Operator Trainee should be created in the Occupational Index. It takes a training period of approximately 8 weeks for trainees to obtain the appropriate Commercial Driver License, learn all RTS policies and procedures, and be certified as knowing all RTS routes. Following successful completion of the training period, the employee's classification will be changed, as he/she will be allowed to function fully as a Transit Operator.  A consistent rate 10% below the minimum of the Transit Operator will be paid while the employee is in training.

Fiscal Note

There is no fiscal impact in under-filling the Transit Operator positions.

Recommendation

The City Manager recommend the City Commission approve establishment of Transit Operator Trainee in the Occupational Index and compensate employees designated as trainee 10% below the minimum rate of Transit Operator.
