City Commission Support for the SW 20^th Avenue Area Annexation (NB)

This item requests that the City Commission officially adopt a position to support the SW 20^th Avenue Area Annexation.

Explanation

On July 28, 20008, the City Commission adopted Ordinance 0-08-45, to annex a portion of the City of Gainesville Reserve Area around S.W 20^th Avenue, East of and including I-75.  Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Ordinance provide for a special referendum election which will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.  If approved by the voters in the area, the annexation will be effective June 1, 2009.

During the months of September and October 2009, staff will be providing information to the public with regard to the annexation of this area.  This information will include, but not limited to a stand alone website, commercial advertisements, and direct mail.  By adopting an official position to support the annexation, staff may advocate for public support of the proposed annexation.

Fiscal Note

The cost of the public awareness program will not exceed $8,000 and is included in the FY2008 and FY2009 Operating Budgets.

Recommendation

The City Commission adopt an official position to support the annexation of the 20^th Avenue Area and direct staff to engage in advocacy for the successful annexation on the behalf of the City Commission.
