Proposed Cell Tower at Westside Park (B)
This item involves a request to refer the issue of placement of a Cell Tower at Westside Park to the Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee for review.
Explanation
On July 24, 2003 the Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee heard information from representatives of cellular phone companies about the need for and placement of a cellular tower at Westside Park. A motion was made and approved to work with the cell tower representatives on gathering additional information and presenting findings to the full Commission at the January 28, 2004, City Commission meeting. This item was withdrawn and no further action was taken.
In April 2009, the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department were approached again about potential placement of a cell tower at Westside Park. This issue was referred to the Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee at the May 21, 2009 City Commission meeting. Due to ongoing fiscal challenges, the Committee may want to consider the need, fiscal benefits and park/community impacts of allowing a cell tower to be located in Westside Park.
Fiscal Note
There is no fiscal impact to the City of Gainesville at this time. Construction of a cell tower at Westside Park would provide ongoing revenue to the City.
Recommendation
The Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee: 1) hear a presentation on the placement of a cell tower at Westside Park; and 2) take appropriate action as necessary.
