Title
Tallow Removal Partnership Program (B)
Explanation
Many businesses have Tallows in their landscape. Until fifteen years ago, planning staff routinely recommended this species on development projects. This program would sponsor a cooperative effort to remove these invasive exotic pest trees that drop hundreds of thousands of seeds each year, causing wetlands degradation and on-going problems for Paynes Prairie State Preserve. Under this program, businesses would have the option of partnering with the Parks Division to replant Tallows with native shade trees. The City would apply herbicide to kill Tallows and discourage stump sprouting. The business would remove the trees and grind the stumps. The Parks Division would then plant replacement trees, and the business owner would provide water and after care.
Fiscal Note
We estimate 100 trees/year would be handled under this voluntary program. No funding is requested. The annual cost would be less than $7,000 in the form of in-kind services and Parks Division nursery-grown trees.
Recommendations
The City Commission approve the Tallow Removal Partnership Program.
