Municipal Competitive Grant Application for Municipal Buildings protection from Airborne Hazards (B)

Explanation
The State of Florida, Department of Community Affairs, Division of Emergency Management has announced funding availability from the Emergency Management Preparedness and Assistance Program. The City of Gainesville Facilities Management Department is applying for $50,000 under the Municipal Competitive Grant Program (award category 4); category 4 projects are those that will further State and Local Emergency Management Objectives which have been designated by the State of Florida as priorities in the Notice of Funding Availability. The City's proposal will address Priority Area A, Projects that will Implement the Community's Local Hazard Mitigation Strategy; and Priority Area B, Projects that will Improve Emergency Management Capabilities.

The grant regulations permit any funds applied for, or received by, the applicant for the proposed project or a similar project to be identified as match. These grant funds will enhance the City's disaster preparedness and support continuity of government operations.

Municipalities are a major source of direct resources and services in time of disaster. Municipal buildings are essential to the welfare and protection of residents, and in responding to community and citizen needs after a disaster. Grant funds would be used to retrofit City Hall, the Old Library Building and Thomas Center "B" by raising the fresh air return vents up to a level greater than 20 feet high so as to eliminate easy access in times of terrorists activity.
