Title
Code Enforcement Neighborhood Volunteer Program (B)
Explanation
One of code enforcement's greatest assets is citizens. Concerned, active neighbors who care about their neighborhoods are always instrumental in getting problem cases resolved. In the face of greater awareness of code enforcement issues and the increase in interest and complaints shown by City of Gainesville citizens, the Code Enforcement Division wishes to enlist volunteers.
Other cities have incorporated such programs and report great success with them. In fact, the Pleasant Street Neighborhood Association has used a very similar program for many years. A great number of our cases are resolved with only one contact to the tenant or property owner regarding their violation. However, the first inspection and notification process requires several hours of staff time plus costs associated with property ownership research.
It is not the goal of the program to divert or ignore complaints, but rather to utilize volunteers as the eyes and ears of the community, helping to protect and enhance our neighborhoods. The program will supplement existing code enforcement resources and programs.
