Explanation
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued new Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Alachua County, including the City of Gainesville on June 16, 2006. A local flood study originally carried out in 1974 and updated in 1986 was incorporated into the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps. The Flood Insurance Rate Map changes added 1,411 parcels to the Special Flood Hazard Area, removed 709 parcels resulting in a net increase of 702 parcels within the City of Gainesville.
The City of Gainesville Public Works Department has responded to citizen requests for information and provided assistance with applications for Letters of Map Change and determinations of qualification for FEMA Flood Insurance discounts under Grandfather Rules. Neighborhood Meetings on the new Flood Insurance Rate Maps were held when requested by neighborhood association leaders.
Local efforts are underway to modernize the Flood Insurance Rate Maps within the City of Gainesville. Flood study updates have been completed for Sweetwater Branch and Tumblin Creek. The studies are currently being reviewed by FEMA. Flood study updates for Little Hatchet Creek and Lake Forest Creek are scheduled to begin in 2008. FEMA has funding available for flood study updates through their Map Modernization Program. The Map Modernization Program is administered in Florida through the Water Management Districts. The City of Gainesville is located within both the St. Johns River Water Management District and the Suwannee River Water Management District.
