Title

Adoption of the Wind Speed Line for the City of Gainesville (B)

Explanation

During the 2000 Legislative Session, a law was enacted that requires local governments to establish by ordinance the exact location of wind speed lines using recognized local landmarks such as major roads, canals, rivers, and lake shores. According to GIS positioning there is only one wind line that impacts Gainesville. Interstate 75 will be the dividing line for 100 MPH and 110 MPH structural wind calculations. Everything constructed East of I-75 will be designed for 100 MPH, while everything constructed West of I-75 will be designed for 110 MPH.

Fiscal Note

There will be no additional fiscal impact East of the proposed line. There will be an anticipated 2% increase in the cost of construction West of the proposed line due to increased wind pressures.

Recommendation

The City Commission authorize the City Attorney to draft and the Clerk of the Commission to advertise an amendment to the Code of Ordinances amending Chapter 6 to include a section establishing the 100 MPH and 110 MPH wind line.
