Vehicle Impoundment Program (B)
Explanation
As part of the 2011-2012 biennial budget process, the City Manager presented several proposals recommended by the Employee Budget Strategy Team. The Team recommended a Vehicle Impoundment program.
Currently the City charges no fee for vehicles towed following an arrest. The tow company charges their standard tow fee and a daily storage fee. The proposed program would include an impoundment fee following arrests where the vehicle was used to facilitate the commission of certain crimes. The impoundment fee would be charged and collected by the City and would be in addition to the towing and storage fee charged and collected by the tow company.
Fiscal Note
At the proposed fee of $500, the program would generate approximately $235,000 annually.
Recommendation
The Public Safety Committee 1) hear a presentation from staff; and 2) recommend that the City Commission direct the City Attorney to draft and the Clerk to advertise a vehicle impoundment ordinance.
