This item is a request to convert a portion of NW 4th Avenue between Main Street and NW 1st Street from a one-way to a two-way street.
Explanation
The Public Works Department received a request to evaluate the possibility of converting NW 4th Avenue between N. Main Street and NW 1st Street from a one-way street to a two-way street. This request is based upon the upcoming Main Street reconstruction and concern about access restrictions to businesses along Main Street during the construction phase. NW 4th Avenue is a one-way westbound street; therefore, customers can only access the businesses in this vicinity from Main Street.
Staff has reviewed the conditions of NW 4th Avenue and has determined that it is similar in design to the other two-way streets in the area. This conversion can be implemented with minimal expense and will improve access not only to the businesses but to the neighborhood.
The conversion will involve the installation of one STOP sign and approximately 75 feet of pavement markings - 12' wide stop bar and 50" of double yellow center line approaching Main Street.
Fiscal Note
Funding in the amount of approximately $100 for materials is available in the Public Works FY 2009 operating budget.
Recommendation
Recommended Motion: The City Commission approve the conversion of NW 4th Avenue to a two-way street between N. Main Street and NW 1st Street.
Alternate Recommendation: Deny the Recommended Motion and leave N.W. 4th Avenue in the unit block as a one-way street.
