This item requests that the City Commission authorize an application for the 2011 Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation Community Grant.
Explanation
The Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) was established in 1957 and contributes annually to diverse organizations across the United States for community improvement and public education. Grant awards range from $5,000 to $25,000 and organizations are limited to one application per year. Projects that are subject to consideration under this grant program include repairs and renovations to facilities serving the community. Safety City, located at the Gainesville Fire Rescue Administration complex, is a collection of buildings and other structures used for public education by a variety of agencies including Gainesville Fire Rescue, Safe Kids Coalition, the city's bicycle safety program, and the Gainesville and University Police Departments. If awarded, the Gainesville community and in particular Gainesville's children would benefit from this grant through enhancements to the existing facilities at Safety City.
Fiscal Note
There is no fiscal impact as the grant does not require a match.
Recommendation
The City Commission: 1) authorize the City Manager to submit an application for the LCEF Community Grant; and 2) if awarded accept the award.
