Title
Senior Recreation Center (B)
The City Commission is asked to accept the ranking of sites for a proposed senior recreation center.
Explanation
A senior recreation center proposal has been developed by the Community Coalition for Older Adults, which asked that the City of Gainesville consider allowing a senior recreation center to be located at either Northside Park, Cone Park or the Northeast Complex. On January 14, 2008, the City Commission referred the matter of locating the proposed senior recreation center at one of these City parks to the Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee and to the Public Recreation and Parks Advisory Board for their consideration.
The Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee met on February 7, 2008, and received a formal presentation from the Community Coalition for Older Adults and, following discussion, voted to recommend the following ranking of parks to the City Commission: 1) Northside Park; 2) Northeast Complex; and 3) Cone Park. On February 27, the Public Recreation and Parks Advisory Board discussed the proposed senior recreation center. The Board did not vote on this item, but indicated that they were in favor of the priority rankings as long as the use of the center was not restricted to seniors only, and that the proposed funding source would not impact any additional recreation and capital parks projects.
If the City Commission accepts the Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee's rankings of sites, staff will continue to work with the Community Coalition for Older Adults and its partners, including ElderCare of Alachua County and Alachua County, to appropriately site a senior recreation center at one of the City parks. ElderCare of Alachua County has been designated to take the lead in further developing the senior recreation center proposal, including seeking funding for the construction and operation of the center.
