Explanation

Commissioner Poe brought this referral forward at the October 18, 2012 City Commission meeting with a request that City Attorney Staff and GPD Staff research the need for buffer zones around women's medical clinics to keep protestors from passing the barrier.

The Public Safety Committee discussed this referral at the January 8, 2013 meeting where they heard from Senior Assistant City Attorney Stephanie Marchman on the First Amendment issues regarding this issue.  Police Chief Jones summarized research his staff did on reported incidents at the specific clinics in Gainesville.  Safety issues were a top priority for the citizens who spoke to this issue.

The Public Safety Committee continue to discuss the issue of drafting an ordinance creating a buffer zone around medical clinics.
