Title
Airport Signage Update (B)
Explanation
On February 20, 2014, the City Commission referred this item to the Community Development Committee for review of signage options for the Gainesville Regional Airport.
The Gainesville Regional Airport has contacted and met with Planning Department staff regarding installing new airport signage along Waldo Road and replacing the existing entrance sign on NE 39th Avenue. The initial proposal by the airport conflicted with the allowable number of signs, total square feet of sign area, and location of freestanding signs allowed by the existing sign code. Subsequent to the City Commission referral to the CDC, planning staff, the airport manager, and legal staff from the City Attorney's office met to discuss possible options. These options are outlined in the memo included in the backup materials.
Staff assessed the potential options in light of the airport's expressed desire to move quickly to establish greater visibility along the Waldo Road corridor in conjunction with the opening of the new airport access road. Based on these considerations, planning staff is recommending adding a section to control signage for Gainesville Regional Airport to the forthcoming sign code ordinance. The proposed code section is included in the backup materials
Recommendation
The Community Development Committee hear a presentation from staff on options for Gainesville Regional Airport signage and provide direction to staff.
