Purchase of Farebox Upgrades for Regional Transit System (RTS) Buses (B)
This item is a request to purchase farebox upgrades and infrastructure from SPX Genfare for Regional Transit System (RTS) buses.
Explanation
Regional Transit Sytem (RTS) implemented its current revenue collection system in May of 1985. SPX Genfare is the manufacturer that provided the system and CENTSaBill Registering Fareboxes.
The equipment has performed well but has now surpassed its useful life expectancy resulting in declining reliability and significant increases in maintenance costs. With this failing equipment and infrastructure, RTS began purchasing SPX Validating Fareboxes with its bus orders in 2005 and has accumulated an inventory of 38 SPX Odyssey Fareboxes. During this time RTS has continued to seek funding opportunities to accomplish the upgrade of the revenue collection system in the remaining fleet and has been fortunate to obtain $1,495,393 in grant funding. The funding will also allow installation of the infrastructure needed for the new RTS Maintenance Facility currently under construction.
In addition, SPX Genfare has indicated that they will no longer support the legacy CENTSaBill Registering Fareboxes after the end of calendar year 2014.
Fiscal Note
The $1,495,393 for the upgrade and infrastructure is available through a FTA State of Good Repair grant.
Recommendation
The City Commission: 1) approve the purchase of the upgrade and infrastructure from SPX Genfare for Regional Transit System (RTS); and 2) authorize the City Manager or his designee to issue purchase orders to SPX Genfare.
