This item is a request for the City Commission to authorize a pilot program utilizing solar-powered charging stations.
Explanation
At their February 19, 2015, the City Commission referred consideration of a six (6) month trial of installing solar cell phone/computer charging stations to the Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee (RCAPW). This matter was discussed at the RCAPW Committee on May 14, 2015. Jason Fults, Pure Energy Solar International Inc., was in attendance and expressed a desire to work with the City, particularly with RTS, to set up solar-powered charging stations around Gainesville as a pilot program and at no cost to the City.
The Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Public Works Committee expressed a desire to participate with Pure Energy Solar International Inc., in pilot program utilizing solar-powered charging stations provided at no cost to the City.
Subsequent to the May 14, 2015 RCAPW Committee meeting RTS staff met with Pure Energy Solar International Inc. to discuss potential locations for solar-powered charging stations at the Rosa Parks RTS Downtown Station and possibly the Butler Plaza Transfer Station upon its completion.
Fiscal Note
There is no fiscal impact associated with the establishment of a pilot program.
Recommendation
The City Commission authorize the City Manager to establish a pilot program utilizing solar-powered charging stations at locations to be determined by and at no cost to the City.
