Title

Mexican Restaurant/Sprinkler System/Fire Sprinkler Requirements (B)

This item provides information on the Florida Building Code requirements for fire sprinkler protection. *ESTIMATED STAFF PRESENTATION 15 MINUTES*

Explanation

In August 2015, a local establishment, La Pasadita Mexican Grille at 4126 NW 6th Street, expanded into a neighboring suite and increased its occupant load to 91.  The business is seeking a full liquor license; however, in Alachua County, this would require seating of 100 or more people.  The owner was informed by the City’s Building Department that altering the floor plan to accommodate more than 100 people would require fire sprinkler protection based on the Florida Building Code.  Representatives of the business brought their concerns to the City Commission meeting on November 5, 2015 and the Commission referred the issue to the Public Safety Committee.

Gainesville Fire Rescue has prepared a presentation on fire sprinkler requirements and will provide the Committee with an update on the issue.

Fiscal Note

There is no fiscal impact at this time.

Recommendation

The Public Safety Committee hear the presentation and provide staff direction.
